The New 2004 TruckerTracker Driver’s Daily E-Log.
Don’t drive truck without it
Starting January 3, 2004 the Department of Transportation (DOT) will put into effect the New Driver Logging Rules. These rules will apply across the United States of America and will apply to all commercial drivers with a few exceptions. Some of the exceptions are, farmers, oil field drivers, and bus drivers. We will deal only with the new logging rules for commercial drivers who drive and use the 8 day 70 hour Driver’s Daily Log.
Fines for Log Violations will start at $550 and can be as high as $11,000 per violation. The DOT is serious about enforcing the new rules. States can and will add on their own new fines in addition to those of the DOT. I suggest that you learn the rules and make the best of them. We do not have to like the new rules, but we will have to learn them. The New TruckerTracker E-log will become the most important part of a driver’s daily activity.
Rules to be especially aware of:
1)      Know the time when you started driving, and know when you have to stop.
2)      You may only drive a maximum of 11 hours per day.
3)      Know how to split driving hours using the new sleeper berth rule requirement of 10 hours per day instead of 8 hours.
4)      Know from the time you start driving, 14 hours later you will have to stop and log a minimum of 10 hours sleeper berth time before you start driving again.
5)      The 14th hour on duty includes, eating, showering, fueling, and napping. (I think this will be where many drivers will be caught and fined for overdriving).
6)      The sleeper berth time can extend the 14th hour rule. Know how to extend the 14-hour rule. This is the rule for Sleeper Berth Exception: Drivers may split on-duty time by using sleeper berth periods, but must comply with the new hours-of-service rules. These drivers may accumulate the equivalent of 10 consecutive hours off-duty by taking 2 periods of rest in the sleeper berth, provided:
1.      Neither period is less than 2 hours;
2.      Driving time in the period immediately before and after each rest period when added together does not exceed 11 hours; and
3.      The on-duty time in the period immediately before and after each rest period when added together does not include any driving after the 14th hour.
